What is everyone reading?

So just was wondering what everyone was reading, weither it here on the website or in handy dandy physical formats. What is everyone reading? What do they think of them?

I just finished a book on the Greek gods, and am re-reading the last books in the Eargon series. I also have read the newest book by Laruall K. Hamilton Kiss the dead, and I am about to start on 50 shades of grey.

So far I enjoyed the Greek gods book quite a lot though, it was my nieces so it wasn't as detailed as I would have liked it. But it has re-wet my taste for reading about them. Actually I read the lightning thieif like two weeks ago and that made me want to read more about the gods. I think that I might in my spare time make a study of them just to get to know the myths better.

I really loved inheritance the first read through, but I am such a speedy reader (Not a speed Reader) that when I go through the first time I often miss nuances so re-reading thus far has been really great. The ending is not to my liking but you can't always get what you wont.

Kiss of the dead was fun, but I kind feel that L. K. Hamilton is kind of just righting fluffer stories right now while she finds a new big bad baddy to throw at Anita. Dont get me wrong her smut is great. So I don't mind reading the filler. But We Want Big, bad baddy! dammit.

Re: What is everyone reading?

I'm currently reading "Phantom" by Susan Kay. Or should I say, re-reading it. I've had the book so long, the pages are falling out. It plays out the life story of Erik, or the Phantom of the Opera. It's devilishly wicked and spell binding, in my opinion.

I have about 200 books here, most of which I've read before and I'll go after again.
I've read Hamiliton's Anita Blake series and Gentry series (through whatever books she's released) and I like her writings. But I also LOVE Shelley Laurenston, AKA G.A. Aiken. Her books are mainly about 'shifters' (were animals), but her sense of humor is written into these books and I laugh soooo much while reading her books (some sex included, too). I've read all of Jacqueline Carey's books (LOVE EM) MANY times. I've read 'River God' by Wilbur Smith many a time.

And of course, I've read Eric's Woodward series, through whatever he has written (yes, this means I'm WAY ahead of everyone else. misch_smiley ) I had to go back and read all the chapters to remember it. Have I mentioned I HATE reading stories while they're being written? Sooo slooooow! (Forget I typed that, Eric).

Re: What is everyone reading?

Yea, I have read a few of those authors as well, though some I haven't. Kiss of the dead is the newest book in the Anita Blake series. I can understand the not like to read things while there being written concept though. I read several online serial mangas and i am always chomping at the bit to read the one that comes out next week.

Re: What is everyone reading?

I read a lot of stuff.  The only thing lately that I'm willing to recommend, though, is Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series.  The fourth book, Tricked, came out not too long ago.  I think Hounded was the first, but I wouldn't swear to it.  It's about the last living Druid on Earth and his problems with the Celtic pantheon, among other things.  He has a bond with his dog that lets them communicate with each other and the dog is pretty damn funny.  And it's chock full of mythology (not only Celtic, but Norse, Navajo, Slavic...)  It helps to know who the gods are, but it isn't necessary.  I don't know enough about the Celtic pantheon, but I enjoyed them anyway.

I used to read LKH's stuff, but I gave up on the Merry Gentry series when it seemed like a) the books were way too short and b) the plot wasn't going to get anywhere at less than a glacial pace, aside from the sex.  And I quite liked Anita Blake, until I hit around Cerulean Sins or so when it started to seem like the solution to any problem was "have sex".  And sometimes they needed to take time out of their problem solving to...have sex.  I don't mind some sex in my novels, but when the series started, it wasn't straight porn and I started missing how the plot was shoved aside so she could get yet another complicated sexual quadrangle into the book.  So I don't read her anymore.  Every once in a while I pick up one of her books to browse through it to see if she's rediscovered a love of an actual storyline (it hasn't happened).

Re: What is everyone reading?

Actually and kissing the dead, she doesn't have sex real sex until chapter 14 and it only happens for like 2 chapters, and is mostly plot and what not. But I do agree the books for a while now have been very sex oriented. You should give Kissing the dead a look through. And the Merry Gentry series finished it first main story arc and has started a new one. I will have to look into the Iron Druid series, that sounds like something I'd like to read.

Re: What is everyone reading?

I've read the first of the Iron druid series and plan on reading the rest.

One of my favorite authors is Jim Butcher.  His Dresden Files series follows the life of modern day wizard and PI Harry Dresden in Chicago.  The best thing about it is that its looong - there are currently 13 books in the series and Jim pans on adding another 7, at least, plus a three part apocalyptic finale.

His other series is Codex Alera (6 books), which follows the coming of age of Tavi a young boy in the human kingdom of Alera (founded by a lost legion of Romans?).  In this world, Tavi is considered a freak because unlike everyone around, he cannot commune and control the elemental spirits (furies) of the world, which allows humans to perform magical-like feats.  There's lots of action and politics.

Re: What is everyone reading?

Ok where to begin...
At this moment I'm reading Naomi Novik's Temeraire trilogy due to a friend telling me to. All of Robert Jordans Wheel of time series, (can't say they have spines anymore) L.E. Modesitt Jr.'s order and chaos series, I read all of Karen Miller's Kingmaker Kingbreaker series though I was as disappointed until the ending just like Stephen Donaldson's White gold wielder series, I am up to date here with all posted stories usually day of if not day late of their posting( what can I say I'm curious as can be of their writing styles) I own too much manga and working second shift when not bar hopping have way too much free time on my hands.

Re: What is everyone reading?

I liked Naomi Novik's series.  Although, you do realize it has more than 3 books in it, don't you?  I think it's more like...5?  I still haven't read the last one or two.

Re: What is everyone reading?

Oh, I forgot about this one, but I saw they had the fourth book out the other day and I jumped on it.  Plus, the first one's free (...so evil when they do that to hook you in), so I will mention it.  The first book is free on Amazon for Kindle, it's The Emperor's Edge (also the series title).  I bought the 4th one, Conspiracy, the other day, so I'm reading that now.  I expect I'll enjoy it just like I did the other three.  It's quasi-traditional fantasy about an Empire that has banned magic and is currently embracing things like steam trains.  Not this planet at all, but there are still assassins and monsters and magic and their version of the police force.  Plus the nobles are still rather fond of swords, so the mix is rather interesting.  I'm pretty sure the description on the actual novel does a better job than I am doing, since I'm trying not to get into the plot. The author is Lindsay somethingorotherthatstartswithaB

Re: What is everyone reading?

I'm reading The Unwritten. I've been reading it for a long time, because it's a comic book and they only work so fast. It is very well-done, though. Best damn comic I'm reading these days. Its starting point is a young man whose estranged father wrote a series of novels about a boy wizard. No, it is not a Harry Potter ripoff; it's about the power and purpose of stories.

It should be popular (and literary) enough that a good metropolitan library may have the trades, which are up to vol.5 with vol.6 hitting in October.

Another comic I'm reading is Harbinger, which just rebooted in June. Fans of our esteemed host's work will find Harbinger to be familiar territory -- psionics. So far the new version is pushing all the fun buttons. Teenager with mind-control, being chased, discovers he's not alone. Well, okay, it's not an adult comic so it's not pushing all the fun buttons...

Re: What is everyone reading?

I'm about to start in on The Laundry Files by Charles Stross.

It's a comedy/horror/supernatural/spy series, about a British agency called... wait for it... "The Laundry", which deals with demonic and extra-dimensional entities.

Apparently, the main character is an IT geek, specializing in "computational demonology" - magic through high level math.

Re: What is everyone reading?

Wow so many good books out there. My list updates itself on a regular. I visit this site and my local library quite often. I finished all of the LA banks series about a month ago, started reading the Percy Jackson series, and am all caught up on that one waiting for the next book to come out which is some time in Novemeber. My girlfriend is reading the Circus De Freak to me before we go to bed. And I am a reading a host of general Knowledge and Self improvement books. I think there is about 14 books sitting on my night stand right now. I just finished Pokemon BW Volume 4 this evening not that it takes a while, and I am an avid reader of both Bleach and Naruto. Though they are both nearing the end of their series.

Re: What is everyone reading?

Well in my absence for the last month or so I have read the entire Darn Shan Vampire Assistant Series, I am one book away from finishing the Lantern Crepsly series by the same author. I have also read several books on BDSM protocols and have been working on writing part of my Vampire story that I do with a friend of mine.

I am waiting on a new book which should be out this month and I am also have downloaded several how to for dummy books to read once I finish the last of my library books. I need to listen to a half a dozen of my audio books as well so I can delete them off my hard drive.

The last story I read on here was the Artifacts by Eric.

Re: What is everyone reading?

My last post I said I was reading the Percy Jackson series, I have since moved on and this may surprise and or shock some but I'm reading the Hitchhikers Guide for the very first time.  I borrowed my wife's copy of all 5 books of the trilogy in one complete book.

Wow, that's cool to see you reading that. I haven't read that series in a long time. My mom made me read it when I was sixteen when I would have preferred to be reading Bryan Lumely. Hope you enjoy it, and remember don't Panic.

Re: What is everyone reading?

Well it has been 4 years since this thread was active so I think it is time to see what everyone is reading today weather it is on line stuff or hard copies.

I am currently working on re-reading Richard S. Tuttle "Origine scroll trilogy" and then to "The sword of Heaven"  that does not count Twilight saga and Vampire Academy series.  Also a few of my favorites on this site Eric Storm's "Camp" both stories and Magusfang's boy/girl/shadow in the grass

Currently not doing all the much online reading, mostly because of doing art and writing while I am on the computer. When I am not playing some sort of MMO. However, I have read all three of the Dark Matters Voyager Series arch, yay for star trek books, I am also re-reading black Ice, I have quite a few other books that were brought here from one of those Air library system here in new orleans, but I haven't started reading them yet, need to finish Black Ice.

Since My last post though I have read all of Eric current works, I have read most of Boy in the grass, but haven't moved onto girl in the grass yet, and Half King, best cold, and a few instruction guides haha.

Re: What is everyone reading?

I have been a science fiction fan for over 50 years. the last ten or so I tend more to series, one stand alone novel is just not long enough to keep and capture my attention.  Eric flint and David weber are two of my current favorites. But I still reread the foundation series and have a commemorative copy of SLAN
