About Finding Yourself in High School

Sometimes the way forward is to go back to the beginning.

Mind-control stories are some of my earliest favorites. The high school mind controller in particular is a familiar and favorite subject. But when I started writing, I kind of skipped that first step of writing that version of myself.

I haven't published anything in a long time, because I haven't successfully written anything in a long time. I've been thinking about it, but I always get hung up on some stupid plot problem, or I start writing and get stuck grasping for a sentence or a word that I don't immediately hate. I'd put one story aside and try another, and get stuck again. Stories taunt my faded concentration and lack of discipline. So when all else failed I thought I'd start with something new yet familiar.

But this isn't my first attempt at this story. I started thinking about doing my own take on the high school mind controller in '04, had the idea for the opening chapter in '06, and took a serious run at the full-blown story in early '08. I even wrote substantial portions of a few chapters before I ran out of steam, everything seemed to suck, and I went looking for writing mojo elsewhere.

I didn't even look at it again until a few weeks ago. And something just clicked. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's the perverse joy of knowing what happens and wanting to share it, maybe it's just desperation, but whatever it is I'm going to milk it for all it's worth. Because writing is hard, but the result is immensely satisfying.

I hope you enjoy this new trip in a familiar vehicle.

And I hope I do the genre justice.

I don't want to spoil anything, so all I'm going to say is the ending of the prologue is Mean!  You are obligated to provide the next chapter post-haste, dammit.

I really liked the chapter and can't wait to see what you do with it.

I like it so far. I can't wait to see what happens and if Brandon figures out what he is doing.

EXCELLENT Beginning! Jesus Christ but this brings back the bad old memories! I was a whole lot like Brandon back then, the early 70's for me. Bad enough that I understand to at least some extent todays school shootings. I hope Brandon handles it better than I might have with MC abilities. I rode a teeter-totter, depending on exactly what was going on when it popped up. A good day, I'd have come down on the relatively good side. One of the nastier days might have thrust me into the dark side, at least for a time. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where you might go next with this, I'm Definitely adding it to my favorites!

I am SO glad I had put my drink down before I got to the part of this chapter covering Sheri's drive to Brandon's house & Brandon's mental "conversation" with himself during the ride. Anybody within 20 feet of my window likely heard me giggling & snorting all through my reading of that part. And Believe me, those sounds coming from a man in his 50's are.... at least frightening.

But, Goddamn! PLEASE continue it ASAP!

Was really good actually. The concept that he didn't realize what it was almost the whole time was good too. Though a little more detail on it would have been better.

If I told you all that the long delay between postings was part of my homage to the genre, would you believe me?

Hair's wet, shower's wet, towel's used; sell the lie by pointing out the obvious truth.
Or, maybe part of him wants his mom to know.

If you cannot, or do not wish to, use PayPal, but you still want to make a donation, you can use one of the methods below:

Why Donate?

You may be wondering why you should bother donating to some guy on the internet that you don't know.

I'm not going to lie: I don't really need donations to keep the site running. The site costs me less than $20 a month. Though donation money does go to pay those bills, the primary need is elsewhere.

I am disabled, and live on a fixed income. I also own an old house that is beginning to have "issues". The appliances inside the home also seem to want to break frequently.

On top of that, I live in a place prone to hurricanes, which not only means worrying about the house falling down every summer, I have to worry about being able to handle evacuations and things like that.

The point is, the donations aren't for the site. They're to keep me fed, clothed, and housed, and also allow me a little bit of discretionary spending, instead of having to watch every dime to make sure I don't go over budget that month.

So What Do I Get for Donating?

Not a goddamned thing. Let me be crystal clear: Making a donation does not entitle you to anything at all. Donations are a gift, not a payment for a service or product.

That being said, I do like to say thank you to those who support me. I usually do that by granting special access to the website. What does "special access" mean? Well, not a whole lot, but it means you have extra file formats to download stories in, and it also gives you access to "PRM" content.

What is PRM content? PRM stands for "Pre-Release Material". It is stuff that you are allowed to read before it goes public. How long before it goes public is up to each author that chooses to participate in the PRM system.

In conclusion, if you want to help keep me funded and happy, please make a donation by your preferred method of those listed above.

And thank you in advance.
