Never received an email update to tell me when a story has been update
Does this actually work?

No.
And it hasn't for years and years. GoDaddy's email server is simply too unreliable to bother trying to make the notification system work. Your best bet is to simply check the front page of the site every few days. (Or whatever your preferred interval is.)
